I am all for this!!
I endorse and support the Open Primaries initiative, IP55.
Lifelong Oregon resident and veteran. In favor of open primaries to make our representatives more representative.
It’s long overdue that open primaries be allowed in Oregon. Nonaffiliated voters are the largest group of voters. Our votes should matter. What are the dominant political parties afraid of?
I am a fifteen-year-old sophomore attending Lake Oswego High School. Although I am not yet legally eligible to vote, I hold strong convictions regarding voter fairness and the importance of opening primary elections. Throughout my life, I have observed the growing extremism and division that result from heightened political party polarization. I was raised in a household that does not fully align with either major political party, and I personally do not believe that meaningful civic participation should require choosing between them. I believe that strengthening our democratic system requires broader civic engagement, and genuine engagement depends on the inclusion of diverse perspectives. Requiring voters to affiliate with a specific political party in order to participate in primary elections unnecessarily excludes many individuals from the democratic process. No person should be denied the opportunity to participate in these elections solely because they do not identify with a particular party. All citizens, regardless of party affiliation or lack thereof, should have the right to participate fully in primary elections in the state of Oregon.
This is an opportunity to finally include all voting voices in the important selection of future leaders.
We’ve waited way too long to adopt this sensible change to our system of voting. Let’s get this done and reach all voters!
Over 50% of veterans are not affiliated with either major party. To thank them let’s let veterans along with others vote in the OR primaries.
